The Manhattan Declaration (A Call of Christian Conscience) of November 20, 2009 written and signed by cardinals, archbishops, bishops, Catholics, Protestants and Orthodox is a public call so that everyone would turn himself to the One who is the Truth, the One who came to save what was lost. Our American brothers are standing up against what they call “unjust laws” that are opposed to “the sanctity of human life, the dignity of marriage as the conjugal union of husband and wife, and the rights of conscience and religious liberty”. The signers conclude: “no power on earth, be it cultural or political, will intimidate us into silence or acquiescence” and “We will fully and ungrudgingly render to Caesar what is Caesar’s. But under no circumstances will we render to Caesar what is God’s.”
Saint Paul, in the same spirit, teaches us: “Therefore, laying aside falsehood, speak truth each one of you with his neighbor, for we are members of one another”. Eph 4: 25.
The last century was marked by a violent atheistic and materialistic ideology which has left in its wake a civilization nearly devoid of the signification of life. Men no longer believe that history can be redeemed and transformed by the recovery of the natural laws engraved in man’s heart.
« For the word of God is eternal, living and active » Heb 4:12-13. Yes, the Word of God is this two-edged sword which divides the light from the darkness thanks to the power of the Holy Spirit. By his Resurrection power, He works to transform our own paths of death into life. Each one of us must a choice, the choice of life, especially those in leadership.
“The 21st century will be spiritual or it shall not be.” The survival of mankind will come from this spiritual choice which will determine its destiny. Then let each one, filled with the spirit of Elijah, teach one’s neighbor (who maybe erring on a path of death) about the sanctity of life from conception to natural death. Let us reach to the littlest ones and the greatest, including those who received power and authority.
« Do you not know that you are a temple of God and that the Spirit of God dwells in you? If any man destroys the temple of God, God will destroy him, for the temple of God is holy, and that is what you are ». 1 Cor 3:16-17.
To those who received power, authority and the capacity to decide for others, the book of Wisdom reminds: « Give ear, you that rule over multitudes, and boast of many nations. For your dominion was given you from the Lord, and your sovereignty from the Most High; he will search out your works and inquire into your plans. Because as servants of his kingdom you did not rule rightly, or keep the law, or walk according to the purpose of God, he will come upon you terribly and swiftly, because severe judgment falls on those in high places. For the lowliest may be pardoned in mercy, but the mighty will be mightily tested… But a strict inquiry is in store for the mighty. To you then, O princes, my words are directed, so that you may learn wisdom and not transgress. For they will be made holy who observe holy things in holiness, and those who have been taught them will find a defense. Therefore set your desire on my words; long for them, and you will be instructed ». Wisdom 6 :1-11
For you princes, congressmen, senators, etc…: « If you turn to him with all your heart and with all your soul, to do what is true before him, then he will turn to you and will no longer hide his face from you » Tobit 13:6
More than ever, in 2010, let us be faithful to the “Jericho of praise” where we are, to break the chains of the modern Babylon.
The council Alleluia-France
