It is within the intimacy of God’s heart that the first Adam was created: « Let us make man in our image, after our likeness … » Gn.1, 26. One could translate « in our shadow » because in Hebrew the words image, likeness and shadow are « tselem (צֶלֶם) ». When God makes the creating gesture it is said: « God created man in his image, in the divine image He created him; … » Gn.1,27. The particle that precedes the word image in the Hebrew text, « bet בְ » means « inside » expressing a close relationship, a contact, an interiority between the creator and the creature, thus showing that the man came straight out of the heart of God and the verb « bara, create » used on this occasion reinforces this sense as it is only used for God.

Mysteriously, the man seduced by the prince of lies sacrifices that true freedom that assures divine dependence, to independence, isolation, the absence of communion with the Other. With this original sin, the suffering that God did not create just made its appearance on earth.

Facing this break God is shaken to his deepest innards, because He knows all of its consequences. So the Father sent his only begotten Son: « For this reason, when he came into the world, he (the Christ) said: « Sacrifice and offering you did not desire, but a body you prepared for me; holocausts and sin offerings you took no delight in. Then I said, “As is written of me in the scroll, Behold, I come to do your will, O God. » Heb.10, 5-7.

So, Jesus comes out from the heart of the Trinity to enter man’s heart by creating an intimacy even deeper than the first. Emmanuel means « God with us. » The preposition « Im » that begins the name Emmanuel means « with » but also « in » with a sense of communion of natures. Jesus came out of the bosom of the Father to take on our humanity; He lower himself down to the fallen man and come to establish his kingdom in him, there lies the whole meaning of the name « Emmanuel ».

Therefore, Jesus penetrates into the heart of man to let him know God by revealing himself from the inside. Indeed, our flesh, our bodies need to let themselves be married to God because our flesh is « the Bride » Is.62 4. He who is the temple and who the world cannot contain comes to dwell in man by his Body and Blood so that man dwells in him: « God with and in us, Emmanuel. » Thus, « By the mystery of this water and wine may we come to share in the divinity of Christ who humbled himself to share in our humanity » (Canon of the Mass)

In this communion of natures, the divine nature comes to transfigure the thickness of human nature by inhabiting it so that our flesh, crying his hunger for God is sated by Him who is the bread of eternal life, the Emmanuel born in Bethlehem (House of Bread in Hebrew בֵיתלֶחֶם)

« The forming of the kingdom of God cannot be observed, and no one will announce, “look, here it is, “ or, “there it is.” For behold, the kingdom of God is among you. » Lk.17, 20-21.

By becoming one of us, Jesus, Emmanuel, teaches man to « love God, not to fear him, to honor him by loving him not by fearing him » St. Pierre Chrysologue.

Jesus restoring through his humanity the link that man had broken freed for us all the redemptive power of the Holy Spirit who sanctifies and reveals to us the secrets of the Father’s eternal love.

In this year 2013, may we know to welcome the Kingdom of God within us to share it between us.
